The McMichael family's disregard for human life...The tragic Story of the beloved Ahmaud Arbery

A recent video of 25 year old Ahmaud Arbery's tragic murder has surfaced which shows Gregory and Travis McMichael hunting Ahmaud down and taking his life. The duo believed that Ahmaud was responsible for robbing a home in the neighborhood he was jogging in. Unfortunately the encounter ended with the loss of an innocent life in a country that prides itself on the ideology of "innocent until proven guilty." What truth does this sentence hold when black people aren't actually innocent until proven guilty, and police and vigilantes are found to be innocent even when there is proof that they are guilty. Every member of the McMichael family, any bystanders who didn't intervene, and the police department who acted negligently should be held to the highest extent of the law.

Lindsay McMichael, the daughter of Gregory McMichael and sister of Travis McMichael admitted that she posted a picture of Ahmaud’s bloody and battered body on her personal snapchat page as she claims that she is a true crime fan. She is quoted saying “I had no nefarious or malicious intent when I posted that picture…The thing is I am a true fan of true crime—I listen to four or five podcasts a week— I’m constantly watching that sort of thing.” She then went on to say she practiced poor judgement in posting the picture. This is beyond disturbing and outrageous. No matter how big of a true crime fan she is, it is unacceptable to post the slain body of an individual on social media. This is just one example of her and her family’s total disrespect for Ahmaud Arbery and his loved ones. This shows the vile disregard for life that her, her brother, and father have. It is horrible that her brother and father, Gregory McMichael and Travis McMichael chased down Ahmaud Arbery while he was jogging and maliciously shot and killed him. The father and son duo had no right to take the law into their own hands and execute an innocent jogger. Want to be vigilantes like them deserve to be behind bars paying for the innocent life they took.

The issue at hand is that police are not held accountable for beating and killing people of color. This then trickles down to average members of society who believe they can hunt and kill innocent blacks with no punishment. The entire McMichael family has made it obvious that they view black lives as being little to nothing.

My question to Lindsay is if it was a dog or an animal who had been shot and killed would she still have posted the picture to her snapchat? Individuals who have gotten away with harming people of color in the past and continue to get away with taking black lives don’t think of the hurt and pain they inflict on the family members of the deceased. Not only should the involved family members be held responsible but also the Georgia police department who showed gross negligence in bringing this case to the light and prosecuting the cold blooded killers that the father-son duo are. The Georgia Police department let the duo be free for some odd 70+ days before deciding to arrest them.

When will it stop? When will the unnecessary execution of blacks in America be viewed as a crime with prison time as the penalty? When will want to be vigilantes be prosecuted ? When will racial profiling end?The United States Criminal Justice System and it’s enforcers continue to not only promote but demonstrate that black lives don’t matter. We as black americans have to take a stand, educate ourselves, and fight back. I do not mean fighting violence with violence. We as a race need to read and educate ourselves and begin to fight back through knowledge and power. We cannot bow down and continue to be mistreated, we have to be the change we want to see. We must stick together and stand tall and united in the face of constant adversity.
